What is Sustainability in Tourism, and Why It Matters
Sustainable travel goes far beyond simply reducing environmental impact. At its core, it’s about ensuring that travel benefits local communities, protects cultural heritage, and preserves natural environments for future generations. It means choosing travel experiences that give back more than they take, socially, environmentally, and economically.
In today’s interconnected world, where overtourism and climate change challenge the very places we love to explore, sustainability is no longer a niche; it’s a necessity. From the way we move, stay, and eat, to how we connect with people and places, every choice carries weight. Responsible travel ensures that tourism can remain a force for good.
Our Pledge: Sustainability as a Core Value of Anamnesis
At Anamnesis, sustainability is not a trend. It is woven into the way we design and deliver travel experiences in Greece. We believe that meaningful travel must also be mindful. Our role as a boutique Destination Specialist gives us the opportunity -and responsibility- to shape experiences that honor people, culture, and place.
Our itineraries are designed with intention. We prioritize partnerships with family-owned businesses, local artisans, and heritage-driven experiences that keep communities vibrant. For us, luxury lies in authenticity, not excess. We believe that true luxury today means traveling responsibly, with care for people, place, and purpose. Sustainability doesn’t limit the experience; it deepens it.
At Anamnesis, sustainable practices elevate the quality of our journeys, adding depth, comfort, and emotional richness – never compromise.
Travelife Partner Certification: A Milestone on Our Journey
Becoming a Travelife Partner is more than a certification; it’s a recognition of our commitment to measurable, ongoing improvement. Travelife is one of the world’s leading sustainability certification programs for travel companies, covering everything from internal operations and supply chains to social responsibility and environmental impact.
This recognition means we have assessed and improved our practices across the board: from reducing single-use plastics and improving energy efficiency in our workplace, to ensuring that our partners follow fair labor standards. It holds us accountable and helps us grow.
Sustainability in Practice: What We Do, What We’ve Achieved, and What Lies Ahead
Sustainability isn’t just a policy; it’s part of how we operate, collaborate, and think. And it doesn’t come at the cost of comfort or indulgence. In fact, it allows us to offer experiences that are more thoughtfully curated, more personal, and ultimately more luxurious in their essence.
Here’s how our values take shape in the real world:
- Prioritizing local partnerships: We prefer working with small, independent businesses. From local guides and traditional artisans to family-run accommodations. This helps keep tourism income within communities and supports long-term resilience.
- Championing cultural respect: We design experiences that celebrate Greek heritage without overwhelming it. That means visiting monuments outside peak hours to avoid contributing to overcrowding and to allow for a more meaningful experience.
- Embracing slow, low-impact travel: We advocate for walking tours wherever possible, not only to reduce vehicle use, but because we believe walking is the most intimate and enriching way to experience a place. When cars are necessary or preferred, we optimize vehicle size and occupancy, avoiding large vehicles for small groups, while ensuring comfort and safety.
- Going paperless: We deliver all travel documents and tickets digitally, minimizing paper use and offering guests a more seamless experience.
- Working smarter, greener: We’ve adopted a hybrid work model, working remotely four days a week and meeting once a week in a shared office space. This reduces commuting emissions and energy consumption, while still fostering team cohesion and creativity.
- Promoting sustainability through collaboration: Our influence has extended beyond our own operations. Many of our suppliers, inspired by our practices, have adopted sustainable measures or started their education on responsible travel. Small steps, such as replacing plastic water bottles with recycled or paper alternatives, and educating drivers on best practices for reducing carbon emissions, can make a significant difference. This ripple effect reflects the power of shared values and mutual respect.
- Respecting rural rhythms: When visiting remote or traditional communities, we are mindful of their pace of life. We avoid scheduling visits during quiet hours or periods of rest, ensuring that our presence is always respectful and welcomed.
- Taking a leadership role: In 2025, we became a member of the Sustainability Committee of FedHATTA (the Federation of Hellenic Associations of Travel & Tourist Agencies). Through this role, we contribute actively to the conversation around sustainable tourism in Greece, helping shape the path forward for the industry.
We are proud of the steps we’ve taken, but the journey is ongoing. Challenges remain: from influencing wider industry practices to ensuring every link in the supply chain aligns with our values. But we believe transparency, curiosity, and collaboration are key.
This is not just our responsibility. It’s our privilege. Because the Greece we love -and wish to share- deserves nothing less, and our travelers deserve experiences that feel just as good as they do meaningful: refined, immersive, and respectfully luxurious.
